Robust Designs for 3d Shape Analysis with Spherical Harmonic Descriptors

چکیده
Spherical harmonic descriptors are frequently used for describing threedimensional shapes in terms of Fourier coefficients corresponding to an expansion of a function defined on the unit sphere. In a recent paper Dette, Melas and Pepelysheff (2005) determined optimal designs with respect to Kiefer’s Φp-criteria for regression models derived from a truncated Fourier series. In particular it was shown that the uniform distribution on the sphere is Φp-optimal for spherical harmonic descriptors, for all p > −1. These designs minimize a function of the variance-covariance matrix of the least squares estimate but do not take into account the bias resulting from the truncation of the series. In the present paper we demonstrate that the uniform distribution is also optimal with respect to a minimax criterion based on the mean square error, and as a consequence these designs are robust with respect to the truncation error. Moreover, we also consider heteroscedasticity and possible correlations in the construction of the optimal designs. These features appear naturally in 3D shape analysis, and the uniform design again turns out to be minimax robust against erroneous assumptions of homoscedasticity and independence.

Discriminative Spherical Wavelet Features for Content-Based 3D Model Retrieval
The description of 3D shapes using features that possess descriptive power and are invariant under similarity transformations is one of the most challenging issues in contentbased 3D model retrieval. Spherical harmonics-based descriptors have been proposed for obtaining rotation invariant representations. However, spherical harmonic analysis is based on a latitude-longitude parameterization of ...
متن کاملNew 3D Fourier Descriptors for Genus-Zero Mesh Objects
The 2D Fourier Descriptor is an elegant and powerful technique for 2D shape analysis. This paper intends to extend such technique to 3D. Though conceptually natural, such an extension is not trivial in that two critical problems, the spherical parametrization and invariants construction, must be solved. By using a newly developed surface parametrization method–the discrete conformal mapping (DC...
متن کاملA spectral approach to shape-based retrieval of articulated 3D models
We present an approach for robust shape retrieval from databases containing articulated 3D models. Each shape is represented by the eigenvectors of an appropriately defined affinity matrix, forming a spectral embedding which achieves normalization against rigid-body transformations, uniform scaling, and shape articulation (i.e., bending). Retrieval is performed in the spectral domain using glob...
متن کاملShape analysis of left ventricle using spherical harmonics functions
This paper presents an approach for the parameterization of 3D triangular mesh surfaces of spherical topology objects. Our approach is decomposed in two steps. The first step consists in parameterizing the surface by defining a continuous one-to-one mapping from the surface of the object to the surface of a unit sphere [10]. The optimization of initial parameterization is formulated as a constr...
متن کاملHybrid boundary-medial shape description for biologically variable shapes
Knowledge about the biological variability of anatomical objects is essential for statistical shape analysis and a discrimination between healthy and pathological structures. This paper describes ongoing research on a novel approach that incorporates variability of a training set into the generation of a characteristic 3D shape model. The proposed shape representation is a hybrid of a fine-scal...
